Broad Ripple.
Old river town turned walkable village where the Monon, the canal and White River meet.
The lowdown
Broad Ripple was its own little town until Indianapolis annexed it in 1922. Today it's a walkable village about seven miles north of downtown, where the White River bends, the Central Canal starts its run south and the Monon Trail cuts right through. Side streets are lined with bungalows and cottages, with apartments and newer condos close to the action. We love it for an evening on foot: dinner, a show, ice cream by the trail.
