Fishers.
A railroad stop turned city, with Geist Reservoir, the Nickel Plate Trail and Conner Prairie.
The lowdown
Fishers started in 1872 as Fisher's Switch, a railroad stop named for Salatheil Fisher. The swampy ground earned it the nickname "Mudsock." It stayed a small town for a long time, became a city in 2015, and sits about 20 minutes northeast of downtown. The houses run from 1950s ranches and big 1980s subdivisions to lake homes on Geist Reservoir. Newer apartments cluster around the Nickel Plate District. Walk or bike the Nickel Plate Trail, catch a show at the amphitheater, or spend a day at Conner Prairie's living-history farm.
