Glendale.
Indy's first suburban shopping center, about seven miles north of downtown on Keystone.
The lowdown
Glendale grew up around Indy's first big suburban shopping center. The Glendale Shopping Center opened on Keystone Avenue in 1958. It was designed by mall pioneer Victor Gruen, enclosed in 1970, and turned back into an open-air center by 2008. Today it's Glendale Town Center, with Target, a library branch and a movie theater. Around it you'll find streets of mid-century ranches and brick homes, plus a few lake neighborhoods. Broad Ripple and Keystone at the Crossing are each a short drive away.

Patties of Jamaica
Family-run since the '80s. Grab a couple of beef patties to go, and add oxtail or curry goat if you're staying for lunch.
- Spice shop
Penzeys Spices
Open the sample jars and sniff your way down the aisles. Walk out with a taco or chili blend for the week.
- Pizza
Some Guys Pizza Pasta Grill
Thin crust with wild toppings for 30-plus years. Try the Thai pie, and their lasagna the first weekend of the month.
- Ramen
Ramen Ray
Sapporo-style ramen from Hokkaido, a few minutes away on 71st Street. Go hungry and get a rich bowl with all the toppings.
