Meridian-Kessler.
Tree-lined streets of Tudors, foursquares and bungalows between Meridian Street and Kessler Boulevard.
The lowdown
Meridian-Kessler runs north from 38th Street to Kessler Boulevard, about five miles north of downtown, with Meridian Street on its west edge. The boulevard is named for George Kessler, who planned Indy's parkway system. Streets here are leafy and walkable, lined with Tudor Revivals, Colonial Revivals, foursquares and bungalows, mostly from the early 1900s. Little commercial corners at 49th and Penn and 54th and College hold some of our favorite breakfast, coffee and jazz spots.

Cafe Patachou
The 49th and Penn original, open since 1989. Go early on a weekend for an omelet and good coffee.
- Coffee
Hubbard & Cravens
Local roaster since 1991 with a cafe right across from Patachou. Grab a bag of beans to take home.

The Jazz Kitchen
Intimate club at 54th and College with live jazz most nights. Reserve a table for dinner and the show.

Mama Carolla's Old Italian
Candlelit red-sauce spot in a 1920s stucco house on 54th. Order the veal Marsala and sit on the summer patio.

Monon Trail
The paved Monon skirts the neighborhood near 54th Street. Ride north to Broad Ripple or south toward downtown.
