Nora.
Far north side crossroads since 1871, with the Monon Trail running right through.
The lowdown
Nora sits on Indy's far north side, about ten miles up from downtown. It started in 1871 as a Swedish immigrant's general store and post office near 86th and Westfield Boulevard. The big growth came in the 1950s, and Nora Plaza opened in 1959. Today you'll find mid-century ranches on wooded lots and tucked-away subdivisions. The Monon Trail cuts straight through, and Oliver's Woods gives you a quiet mile along the White River.
Our top 5
Five things we love in Nora.
- Fried chicken
Hollyhock Hill
Family-style fried chicken dinners served since 1928, with biscuits, green beans and mashed potatoes passed around the table.
- Tacos
Chris' Ice Cream and Mexican Food
Yelp once named it Indiana's best taco spot. Get the campechano taco, then a scoop of mango ice cream.
- Brewpub
Big Lug Canteen
Right on the Monon at 86th Street. Ride up, park the bike, and grab a beer on the patio.
- Garden shop
Habig Garden Shop
A longtime local garden shop. Stop in for fall pumpkins or spring plants for the porch.
- Bagels
Bagel Fair
Family-owned since 1975 with New York-style boiled bagels. Grab a dozen, and try a bialy while you're there.
